An uncompromising competitor in the Michael Schumacher mould, Alonso was the man to break the German’s stranglehold on the sport when he claimed the 2005 and 2006 Formula One titles at Renault. That earned him a move to McLaren where great things were expected. Instead, the relationship turned sour as a precocious Lewis Hamilton chose that moment to announce himself to the world.

Sensing that the British team were favouring their young starlet, Alonso began to lash out. The Spaniard, who had already amassed a small collection of ‘incidents’ in his short career, remained stationary in the McLaren pitlane, denying Hamilton the chance to set another hot lap. It was as a result of this controversy that it emerged Alonso was aware of confidential information belonging to the Ferrari team. ‘Spygate’ was born.

Alonso moved back to Renault for 2008 and 2009 where he languished in mid-table obscurity, waiting for his move to Ferrari. The only major point of interest occurred when ‘Crashgate’ exploded around the team in late 2009.

Alonso always denied he had any knowledge of the plan for Nelson Piquet Jnr to crash his car deliberately in Singapore – an action that proved instrumental in Alonso’s eventual victory. There are those, among them Nelson Piquet Snr, who think it inconceivable Alonso could not have been aware of the plan.

Verdict: A fascinating driver and character, Alonso is as quick as he is uncompromising. Ferrari have looked hot in pre-season testing, which explains why the Spaniard is favourite to pick up a third drivers’ title.


Kehadiran Schumi hanya akan 'turut meramaikan' F1 2010,... kalo dia menempati 5 besar di penghujung kompetisi nanti baru layak kita perhitungkan di musim balap 2011.
Schumi hanya akan menambah gairah Alonso (bebuyutannya) untuk tampil lebih prima kali ini dengan mobil merahnya,... gak kayak musim lalu mobil putih kuningnya gak bisa diajak ngebut....
